Businesses prefer professional economic ministers

JAKARTA. Amid the continuing speculation about a Cabinet reshuffle, businesspeople have expressed the hope that President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo will recruit professional economic ministers with the power to accelerate economic growth.

Among the names suggested for Jokowi’s Cabinet are World Bank managing director Sri Mulyani Indrawati and former Bank Indonesia governor Darmin Nasution.

Deputy chairman of the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) on regional empowerment and logistics Natsir Mansyur said on Monday that according to Kadin, thee ministers had a poor record. The three are Transportation Minister Ignatius Jonan, Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs Indroyono Susilo and Manpower Minister Hanif Dhakiri. The three ministers had made no progress after six months in office, he said as reported by kontan.co.id.

Secretary general of the Indonesian Employers’ Association (Apindo) Sanny Iskandar said that those recruited by the President to join his Cabinet should be professional, with a good vision and good personality.

Deputy Apindo chairman Haryadi Sukamdani said new ministers should also have good communications with supporting political parties and the House of Representatives.

Deputy Kadin chairman Sarman Simanjorang said the President should give at least one year to his ministers to prove their performance before reshuffling his Cabinet. According to him, if the President decides to carry out the reshuffle at present, Darmin and Sri Mulyani are two names that should be taken into consideration for their professionalism in their own field.
