Airport railway operation to be postponed

JAKARTA. State railway operator PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) has postponed the operation of a railway service connecting Soekarno Hatta International Airport in Banten with Jakarta because Manggarai Station in South Jakarta, one of the final two destinations of the service, will not been ready by July.

"I don't think it will be in July. We were waiting for the completion of Manggarai Station," KAI president director Edi Sukmoro said on Thursday, adding that the operation was expected to start in September.

The railway operator said previously that it was still in the process of clearing 1,150 square meters of land in Manggarai, Jakarta, affecting 11 buildings in the area.

However, the trainsets for the airport railway will arrive in July, Edi said.

The airport track will connect Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, Manggarai Station and Kota Station in West Jakarta. The whole track will run along a 36.4-kilometer line.

The train is expected to help the increasing number of air passengers cut their travel time as they currently have to pass through toll roads that are frequently affected by serious traffic congestion. (bbn)
